Sundowners, 2026

Oil on Canvas

115×70 cm

4cm deep canvas. Finished with a mahogany wood frame, ready to hang.

Sundowner is the central piece of my Under Another Sun collection, launched in October 2026 and made in response to my Artist Residency in Jaipur, India at the start of the year.

This piece depicts a Ti Plant I saw on a patio on the outskirts of Jaipur as I sat having late afternoon chai with a new local friend, which began to glow as the January sun slowly set, reflecting the light magically through the dust and grime of the city.

I painted the plant with layers of oils to build a surface that conveyed the light and feel of the leaves, creating a luminosity through the transparent pigments. The background, in contrast with the plant, is textured through multiple applications of thick paints, carved on with palette knives and layered with oxide pigments to replicate the cityscape that surrounded us; simultaneously matte and iridescent, depicting the environment built up over years within the city walls.

The mahogany frame picks elements of warmth from the piece.
