This piece, featuring a pair of Hemerocallis, or daylilies, portrays the beauty of a single moment that we know will not last, but we appreciate in its fullness regardless. As individual flowers, daylilies last for just one day, but each plant produces blooms over and over. A season made of short-lived moments, the enduring beauty of multiple life cycles.
The deep reds of the flowers absorb the surroundings, appearing dark and nocturnal in low-light, and bold when well-lit. The petals and leaves layer softly to create depth, and emerge gently from the near-black background, framing the flame-like centres that hold the warmth, vibrancy and life-force of the flower.
This current collection from my ongoing Urban Nature works includes some large scale pieces inspired by time spent in diverse environments including los angeles, Las Vegas, and Puglia over the last 12 months, as well as parts of India, Canada and the Greek Islands, exploring the impact of native and non-native plant-life on local ecosystems and environments. these pieces are inspired by non-indigenous and invasive plant-life, and encourage contemplation on the impact they have on the environment, ecosystem, and community.
