Red Camellia at Night, 2025

Oil on Canvas

50×50 cm

2cm deep canvas board. Finished with a black wood frame, ready to hang.

From my new Nocturnal Series, exploring how we see plant life at night, this piece depicts a close cropped image of a red camellia against a deep Vert De Gris background.

I studied and took photos of the red camellias in my neighbourhood at night to explore the way the plant sat in the darkness, with the dark red flowers almost disappearing into the dark surrounds. In this piece I used a combination of colours to create the dark background, avoiding any use of black pigment to suggest that there was not emptiness around the plant, as an urban sky is never completely dark due to the light pollution, and subtle colours such as green and violet to create shadows and definition.

This current collection from my ongoing Urban Nature works includes some large scale pieces inspired by time spent in diverse environments including los angeles, Las Vegas, and Puglia over the last 12 months, as well as parts of India, Canada and the Greek Islands, exploring the impact of native and non-native plant-life on local ecosystems and environments. these pieces are inspired by non-indigenous and invasive plant-life, and encourage contemplation on the impact they have on the environment, ecosystem, and community.
