Nothing is Perfect and Everything is Perfect, 2026

Oil on Canvas

80×50 cm

4cm deep canvas. Finished with a dark brown wood frame, ready to hang.

This larger-than-life depiction of a dahlia grown in a friend's garden in the summer of 2026. My obsession with painting dahlias has continued through a number of years; something about the form which is both geometric yet organic makes each bloom a unique work of art, and incredibly soothing on the mind.
I painted this flower in smooth layers of pink oil paints, creating velvety looking petals that are both dark and bright, contrasting with the textured forest green background. The light of the pale yellow corner adds a reflective quality, reminiscent of the sun hitting the flower in a quiet garden.
The Alice Walker quote after which this piece is named reflects the perfection within the imperfection of nature; embodied in this perfect floral form.
The layered pinks and greens create a calming ambience with the piece, which is finished in a deep brown wood frame.
